ABSTRACT
As mentioned briefly in Chapter 8, the perceived colour of most objects is the result of their ability to absorb certain wavelengths or colours in the light passing through them or reflected off their surface. This suppression of parts of the spectrum in the illuminating light is known as selective absorption and plays an important part in the identification of some gemstones.
