ABSTRACT
In 1877, another Frenchman, Frémy, succeeded in using a lead flux to grow large numbers of very small ruby crystals. At that time, the problem with the flux-melt growth of crystals was the difficulty of preventing the multiple nucleation of crystals. This made it virtually impossible to grow large single crystals.
