ABSTRACT

Operational aspects of design are frequently left to the discretion of the architect or design team. In principle this should present no problems to a competent team, but in practice it is very difficult, even for an experienced designer, to understand the nuances of an organization and the detail of its operational strategy. Senior management are very often involved in high-level communication with architects and designers, before and during the construction of a new building or modification of an older one, but this is only a partial solution. Operational roles are properly the responsibility of the functional manager (e.g. in a hotel the rooms, reception, and food and beverage manager) and they should be represented at the design stage.
