ABSTRACT
The first management scientist was that unknown Italian who invented double-entry bookkeeping sometime in the twelfth or thirteenth century. No other management tool can compare with it in simplicity, elegance, and utility. Double-entry bookkeeping, with all its offspring and variations, is still the only truly universal ‘management science’, the only tool of systematic analysis 427that every business, and indeed every institution, uses every day.
