ABSTRACT

Born 14 October 1633, the son of Charles I and Henrietta Maria. He acceded to the throne on 6 February 1685, fled the kingdom on 23 December 1688 and died on 6 September 1701. He married twice: Anne Hyde, on 3 September 1660 (she died 31 March 1671), and Mary of Modena, on 30 September 1673. The children of James II were as follows:

Mary Born 30 April 1662, the daughter of Anne Hyde; married William, Prince of Orange. Proclaimed joint sovereign with her husband on 13 February 1689; died 28 December 1694.

Anne Born 6 February 1665, the daughter of Anne Hyde, acceded to the throne on 8 March 1702; died 1 August 1714.

James Francis Edward The ‘Old Pretender’ or James III; born on 10 June 1688, the son of Mary of Modena. Styled James III in 1701 by Louis XIV; attainted in 1702, he died in Rome on 1 January 1766.

Louisa Maria Theresa Born 28 June 1692, the daughter of Mary of Modena; died 18 August 1712.
