ABSTRACT
The writings of some of the earlier historians have been superseded, at least in part, by the vast amount of recent research, particularly on the first half of the century. While definitive works of an earlier vintage have not been ignored, there is nevertheless an emphasis on the publications of the past thirty or so years and the main areas of debate which have emerged. The place of publication is London unless otherwise stated.
