ABSTRACT

Knowledge workers are fast becoming the pace setters in the societies of all developed countries. But the knowledge society also has its countercultures. The class that rose to dominance in the business society, the industrial worker, is becoming the ‘other half, and the representative of the 50 per cent or so of the population who lack advanced schooling and with it access to knowledge jobs. And, though so far only in the US, a second counterculture is emerging: the ‘Third Sector’ of non-profit, non-governmental institutions. Their unpaid ‘volunteers’ are the largest single group in the American workforce. And these Third Sector organizations have a distinct ethos and distinct values and make a distinct contribution. They are creating active and effective citizenship.
