ABSTRACT

There are problems with adapting established models of governance to create a useful model of sustainable governance. In this chapter we suggest most models of governance are unsuitable for adaptation to governance for sustainability because of their failure to accommodate elements of change that lead to the generation of new knowledge. We suggest standard models of governance cannot accommodate this key dimension because they either focus too narrowly on organizational longevity; or they demonstrate a normative bias, advocating ‘governance’ as opposed to ‘government’ as an end in itself; or they are not readily susceptible to application in a range of organizational contexts.1
