ABSTRACT

Most definitions of sustainability are rooted in the same debates and events that shaped the environmental movement. Key historical events, international agreements, and intellectual arguments have contributed a variety of ideas that we now associate with the concept. As this and the next chapter will establish, however, these ideas contribute to the problem of sustainability meaning everything to everyone. The questions that are sorted through in the environmental literature are not necessarily solved by, but are ongoing in, the sustainability dialogue.
