ABSTRACT

The Age of Power took away from women all their leading economic and political roles in society. Their greatest source of influence stemmed from marriage into leading circles. But even here marriages were arranged by men, seldom in the search for interpersonal compatibility, more often in order to gain political or financial advantages. Against that general social pattern there seemed little need for that delicate balance in the nature of gender relationships that had evolved throughout the primaeval period.
