ABSTRACT
The last table (Table 8.7: Rates by region) touched on another attractive aspect of contracting. There are opportunities for contractors all over the country, and abroad. The spread of jobs in the UK follows roughly the same pattern as that of full-time jobs. London and the South East dominates, with the Midlands next, then the North West, then the North East and Scotland. However, there are pockets where skills are especially short. Scotland, for instance, has a massive financial sector in Edinburgh (the second largest financial centre in Europe according to some estimates). As a result, there are opportunities there which are attractive even to Londoners. The rates for consultants in Scotland actually exceed those for similar people in London.
