ABSTRACT

The foundation for the advancement of Indigenous people’s education needs to be in the hands of Indigenous people. Without their ownership, leadership and engagement with schooling, there will be little that the school can achieve. Without being able to see that the institution of schooling has changed in its approach and attitudes to Indigenous people, there is little basis for Indigenous people to want to take ownership, lead or engage with it. Changes need to occur in parallel, with sufficient opportunity for mutual action to develop. The previous chapter discussed what Indigenous families and the wider school communities could do to contribute to the process of developing mutual action for change. This chapter examines what the school needs to do to demonstrate that it is serious about creating a school culture that is culturally safe for Indigenous children and supportive of reconciliation efforts within the wider school community.
