We have already noted in earlier chapters on the role of government, the legislative context and the European Union that there is a legal dimension to the issue of equal opportunities at work. Individuals have been given certain limited rights to be not discriminated against and to equal pay, access to and treatment at work and employers have had statutory obligations

imposed upon them. In the UK rights and obligations of this kind have been granted in respect of equality on the grounds of race, sex, marital status and more recently in respect of disability.
