ABSTRACT
The diversity of US society is reflected in Americans’ artistic, sporting and leisure lives. These reveal different cultural habits at all social levels; have professional and amateur dimensions; and include participatory and spectator pastimes. They have varied in popularity over a 400-year-old history, have been influenced by new cultural developments and many still hold to their traditional forms.
