ABSTRACT

Web banners, like any advertising medium, are governed by specific guidelines. In Exercise 3.3: Document Presets and Application Preferences starting on page 34, you loaded a collection of document presets that represent a number of standard banner dimensions. File size is another significant factor in commercial web banners, with a standard range between 10k and 40k. As a point of reference, and to clearly illustrate why InDesign is not yet web-banner worthy, we’ll share the results of a simple test. An InDesign document that was 234 px x 60 px, with no animation, and only a rectangle on the page, resulted in a file that was 112K when exported to SWF at the highest compression. OUCH! Not ready for prime time, at least not for commercial advertising. As we said earlier though, you may have occasion to create banners for sites without such rigorous file size restrictions.
