ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the tools of modern format construction, key among which are an understanding of the importance of structure, and of listener expectations. (The expectations they already have—and the new ones the programmer plans to establish.) Also examined: Creating an “identity” for the station, and the use of “consistently—presented diversity” in formatting. Also touched on is the double-edged sword of using sports as a “programming leader” to draw audience. The chapter concludes with a look at the importance of reducing a programming concept to writing in a “format book” to make sure it is fully thought out and properly implemented.
