ABSTRACT

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when sports media became an important player in American society and culture. By the late 1800s, professional sports leagues and college sports programs had succeeded to the point that they had created a high level of interest in the general public. In 1893, Joseph Pulitzer created the first separate sports page at the NewYorkWorld, and he was quickly followed byWilliam Randolph Hearst at the New York Journal. In addition, newspapers began running special weekend sports sections, which helped increase the popularity of sports like college football.
