ABSTRACT

New technology has vastly improved the production process for both print and broadcast. Most of us have seen the old-time movies of the newspaper office, where copy boys take the finished story from the reporter’s typewriter and run it down to layout. In those days, the newspaper had to be put together by hand and then sent to the printing press. When reporters were covering games, they either typed their stories in the press box or phoned them in. For a reporter from a morning newspaper covering a night game, the process was so time-consuming that making a deadline was always a constant concern. This was especially problematic considering that reporters also had to get postgame comments from players and coaches.
