ABSTRACT

One of the most important decisions a young journalist has to make is whether to remain a writer – that is to say a reporter, feature writer, reviewer, etc. – or to move to the production side of newspapers and become involved in sub-editing and presentation. The choice is often dictated by temperament. The variety and creativity in writing are things that attract many young people into journalism in the first place. Yet sub-editing and presentation have their own satisfactions and the production cycle generates a special sort of excitement.
