ABSTRACT

The ability to transmit textual information to a consumer receiver is very powerful. Using the data transmission methods available you can also transmit free-form text to specialized data receivers. The predefined consumer oriented Radio Data System (RDS) features that allow text transmission is: program service name, program type name, provides additional detail to the defined program type code, and radiotext (RT). The minimum RDS display size is eight characters. Since the PS will be displayed for the majority of the time in place of the frequency, then all RDS receivers will have at least eight characters. Since only one RDS feature, radiotext, has more than eight characters, increasing the display size over eight characters has limited benefit. If the decision is made to have a display longer than eight characters, often additional RDS and non-RDS information can be displayed simultaneously when the RT is not currently being viewed.
