ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the various data groups and their application. The data groups are determined by the group type code and version code. The data groups will be presented by their usage rather than in numerical order. The groups are divided into the following headings: consumer receiver applications, service oriented applications and datacasting applications. As the name implies, the type 0 group is the basic Radio Data System data group. All consumer receivers decode this data group, for it contains the Program Service (PS) name and alternative frequency information. The PS name comprises eight characters that are intended for static display on a receiver. Consumer receivers typically store the PS name in memory for instant display once the program identification code is detected. The slow-labeling codes work in conjunction with other data groups to provide a particular feature, such as paging or emergency warning systems.
