ABSTRACT

The Program Service (PS) Name is the station's new identity with Radio Data System (RDS). The importance of the PS Name lies in its use when combined with some other important RDS features, such as the Program Identification (PI) code and the Alternate Frequency feature. The PS Feature is intended to denote the Program Service Name. This name is not dynamic in nature but can be changed when necessary. Most RDS receivers store RDS stations differently than non-RDS stations. When the listener tunes to an RDS station, the stored PS will be displayed as soon as the PI code is received. The RDS specification strictly forbids the dynamic use of the PS feature. In Europe, where RDS has been in use for over ten years, there have been a growing number of complaints where dynamic PS is used. It is best to avoid the use of frequency within the PS, since with RDS frequency is almost irrelevant to the listener.
