ABSTRACT

Storage and transmission are the real reasons why we do to the video and audio all the things have been described in this chapter. When one digitize images and sounds, the amount of storage space or bandwidth required grows many times compared to what is needed for the original analog signals. There are two fundamental reasons for storing compressed programs: for the direct distribution of programs to the end user using the media on which they are stored, and for indirect distribution through other media for further processing or delivery to the end user. Direct distribution is through "packaged media" such as videotapes and videodisks. Digital videotape formats are being developed by groups centered in the United States and Japan involving over a dozen consumer electronics manufacturers to handle high definition (HDTV) and standard definition (SDTV) signals, respectively. The HDTV version is intended for recording and playing back Grand Alliance signals.
