ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at two categories of transmission: wired and wireless. There are two fundamental applications of wired transmission of digital signals with which those of us involved in Advanced Television will be concerned in the future: transmission for delivery of material and programs and transmission for distribution of programs. Combined with the capability for upstream transmission, this would give cable operators the ability to deliver all of the services proposed by the telcos for delivery through "fiber to the home." Thus wired baseband transmission is likely to see its primary application in delivery systems rather than distribution services, at least in the near-to-mid term. Nevertheless wired baseband is a very significant technique that builds on the interconnection methods of the telephone networks to carry video as well as voice and data to the many distribution points. A similar multiplexing regime exists for combining signals for optical transmission of baseband data.
