ABSTRACT

You know the scenario: brisk introductions and the simple question, ‘What do you do?’I am struck speechless. I can give you my job title or tell you at length the activities that make up my day, but that doesn’t seem really to answer the question in any meaningful way; neither title nor diary communicates what it is that I am so passionately wanting to contribute through my paid employment coordinating and developing gifted and talented education in an English local authority. Let me pose a problem. Try to answer this question, without using your job title: ‘What do you do?’ For instance, if you work as a teacher you cannot just answer, ‘I teach’; so what do you say?
