ABSTRACT

Communication involves a complex interplay of listening and speaking. In their early years children usually become skilled at ‘single-track’ communication, where they can communicate their own needs, for example saying ‘More milk’, or express their own experiences, such as ‘I’m playing in the sand.’ These young children can also ‘take in’ simple communication from others and engage in short exchanges of dialogue, for example responding to ‘Do you want toast?’ with a short answer such as ‘Yes please’ or ‘No thank you.’
