Playing with song

In this chapter I make a distinction between ‘performing songs’ and ‘playing with song’. Separating out these two activities in this clear-cut way is a little artificial and in reality there are many shades of singing activity which blend performing and playing. But making this distinction will be useful because it will draw attention to certain aspects of song singing which can otherwise be a taken-for-granted activity in early childhood settings.
