Alternatives Emerge Even before Urs’s death, Gundu Rao had begun to hound his opponents within the Congress out of the party. And there was no dearth of MPs who had turned against him. Sharief, a Bangalore-based Muslim who was a junior minister in the national government, was not afraid of criticising the Chief Minister. Within the party in the state legislature, Bangarappa had also become the focal point of a small group of dissidents. They had long pinned their hopes on Mrs Gandhi, and expected her to discipline Gundu Rao.
