ABSTRACT

Social issues make a good foundation to any dramatic story. They give your story added depth and seriousness, and set up a natural series of conflicts. The key to a successful issue lies, however, in subtlety. The audience doesn’t want to hear characters expounding on their philosophy of life. They want an interesting story that deals with something of substance. The story can be serious or it can be humorous, but above all it 75should make the audience think, without being obvious. Whether one is adapting or modifying an existing social issue from a novel or short story, or creating an original idea with an interesting issue, the social issue is an important dramatic device for enhancing the quality of any screenplay.
