ABSTRACT
A serious childhood illness draws the concern of kin and neighbors. Parents use their child's behavior as a basis for deciding how to proceed in dealing with the illness. Severely malnourished children withdraw from eating and social interaction, making it difficult for parents and kin to know what to do.
