ABSTRACT

The “lm laboratory is one of the few remaining technical areas in moving pictures that has changed very little and still manages to thrive.

Film is processed pretty much the same as it was in the silent-movie days. Film itself has improved, but “lm processing has remained relatively unchanged. (There are issues causing change in “lm labs, such as EPA regulations regarding harmful chemicals in the air and water. But, for our purposes, we•ll let those issues remain the headaches of the lab-guys themselves.) One improvement in the labs is the increased speed at which large amounts of “lm can be pushed through the development process with almost guaranteed safety to your negative. If you are interested, it is well worth the time to take a tour of your “lm laboratory. The laboratory supervisor is usually willing to extend this courtesy so you can better understand the process.
