ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the general types of telecine support equipment and their functions. It is important to understand the true function of the telecine color-correction computer. Although the telecine transfer device itself is capable of producing a complete video signal, telecine manufacturers and a number of specialty companies offer accessory video signal processors for image detail enhancement, video noise reduction, and film grain reduction. In the telecine suite, video still stores are used to make side-by-side comparisons between stored reference frames recorded earlier in the transfer session and the scene currently being color corrected. Post-production telecine facilities have evolved from sparse, rudimentary control rooms to elaborate suites where complete programs may be assembled from a variety of film and video elements. These suites require a video switcher that is capable of handling a number of inputs and performing basic switching, mattes, keys, and wipe.
