ABSTRACT

The articles in this volume generally indicate the independence of American Reform Judaism as a religious movement. And though it may be called Liberal Judaism or Progressive Judaism in other countries, Reform Judaism is an international movement. For most American Jews, the transnational nature of the denomination does not really matter. For many persons, the success of the local synagogue or temple in meeting their religious, spiritual, or social needs constitutes the degree of their interest in their religious “movement.” Macro-level questions concerning the national movement and the ideology and identity of the denomination in general may be irrelevant to many religious adherents.
