ABSTRACT

Both scholars and activists have vested, but often different, interests in understanding and transmitting the stories from the social movements of the past. The legacy of social struggle can offer insights that are useful for understanding contemporary and emerging social movements and insurgencies. Scholars of social movements share their observations about movement patterns and relationships through scholarly and popular publications, presentations, and most importantly, to students in the classroom. Activists, on the other hand, are often more interested in directly applying lessons from past movements toward developing new or reinvigorating existing movements for social change. They are particularly interested in the ways that past movements have successfully mobilized participants, impacted public sentiment, and/or forged social change.
