ABSTRACT

This essay examines the Civil Rights Movement and clarifies its relationship to the college student protest movement of the 1960s and 1970s. This undertaking presents several challenges. First, how do we provide students and faculty with a factual base of knowledge about civil rights and college student protest? Second, how do we assemble appropriate course materials and develop a methodology linking college student protest with the Civil Rights Movement? Finally, how do we encourage critical thinking and writing around this topic? These fundamental questions are addressed in this essay.
