ABSTRACT

In the summer of 1994, many of us who had worked with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee or had been involved in the Freedom Movement were in Jackson, Mississippi, to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of Freedom Summer. Bob Moses, an early SNCC worker, urged everyone to “tell your stories,” so that people will understand what really happened during an era that changed this country. Some white women were already recording their memories, others joined in, and after several meetings, a lot of work, correspondence, and phone calls, our book Deep in Our Hearts: Nine White Women in the Freedom Movement was published by the University of Georgia Press in fall 2000.
