ABSTRACT

There are a couple of ways to adjust the intensity of the fill light. One way is to use a smaller, less powerful lamp. If the key light is 500 watts, then the fill light might be 250 watts. If the two lights are equal distances from the subject, one light will be twice as bright as the other. Placing and controlling the backlight can be difficult, but it’s well worth the effort. How much backlight a person uses depends most on the subject that is being lit. Subjects with blond or white hair or pale clothing will need will need little back-light, as it will quickly brighten into a halo effect. The lighting exercise is very dependent on available equipment and space. Ideally a number of groups of students should be able to set up three-point lighting situations with the space and lamps available.
