ABSTRACT

Tucker took over the bass guitar role, playing bass licks on a low-tuned guitar. "You try to wind it down to the bottom without making that scrunchy sound, when you hit a string and hear it rattle," Tucker explained. "Robert Jr. have really been a help to me in playing music. He give me some bass lines to try to learn, just go home and practice all night 'til I get 'em. I was still trying to play lead some. By Robert Jr. being something like a dad, he'd say 'Okay, you take the lead on this, I'll play background,' but he had most of the leads."Tucker honed his craft on the Sunday jam sessions at The 708 Club. He recalled sit-in guests like Muddy, as well as Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm. Tucker also remembered how"... people would come up and open up [Walter's] hand to see what he had in there to make that beautiful sound."
