ABSTRACT

While Walter was only gigging sporadically in Chicago, like many American blues artists whose fortunes were sagging at home, he was beginning to draw more attention abroad. A group of enthusiasts in England led by Mike Leadbitter started a blues magazine, Blues Unlimited. It began as a mimeographed newsletter, eventually evolving into a slick paper monthly and becoming one of the most respected chroniclers of the blues tradition, before folding in the 1980s. One of the early issues contained a review of Little Walter's newest single, "Southern Feeling"I"Up The Line." John Broven's writeup was complimentary of Walter's playing but not so the context in which it was presented, praising"... a spine chilling solo but this is lost in the general mood of mediocrity." Broven liked the instrumental "Feeling" and hoped the rest was"... just a temporary lapse on Walter and A&R man Willie Dixon's part."
