ABSTRACT

Martial, a satiric epigram m atist and younger contem porary of Josephus, also refers to Jewish licentiousness. He writes o f the woman Caelia that she will grant her favors to one and all, including Parthians, Germ ans, Dacians, Cilicians, Cappadocians, Egyptians, Indians, and Alans. “N or do you flee from the loin o f the circumcised Jew s” (Epigrammata 7:30). H ere Jews are distinguished by their practice o f cir cumcision (recutiorum) and their lechery (itiguina 7:30:4). In the same book (7:35:4), Martial makes reference to a Jewish slave he has, pointing out that he has ludaeum nuda sub cute pond us, implying virility due to a heavy sex organ.
