It’s absolutely essential that you have some audio gear apart from the camera’s built-in mic. To get professional-quality audio, you’re going to need a professional-quality mic at the very least. You simply can’t record good sound from crappy mics. Buy used sound gear, if you can’t afford it new. Unlike cameras, good name-brand professional mics (and lights for that matter) will easily serve you for a decade or more if they are not abused. Here’s the minimum gear I recommend for a doc.
