ABSTRACT
REHEARSING WITHOUT THE BOOK When work begins, actors’ anxiety about remembering lines will temporarily usurp the physical action. Should an actor keep saying he’s unsure of the lines and must have the book just one more time, take the book away and ask him to improvise. It’s more important in any case to play the meaning and spirit of the scene-lines can always be tightened later.
