ABSTRACT

With the advent of inexpensive and user-friendly editing software, digital nonlinear editing (NLE) system has totally eclipsed film editing, so generally speaking, we're all cutting digitally (see Chapter 20). However, the format details between the NLE system and the shooting and finishing variables determines an enormous amount concerning the technical postproduction pathway and, consequently, your budget. On a broad level, workflows can be similar, but in the details, things can get tricky and can change from year to year. This is why you need to research your complete workflow before you start shooting. This includes speaking with people who have taken a similar path and anyone who you'll be working with including sound mixers, editors, and especially film labs if your workflow requires their involvement. A little bit or research up front will save headaches, money, and wasted time down the road.
