ABSTRACT

The final output of the postproduction process is a Delivery Master. While there is a desire among program producers to make a ‘‘one size fits all’’ master, in fact if the program is intended for both theatrical distribution and video distribution to homes, the differences between the sound systems and environments is large enough that different masters are required for optimal sound. Using a cinema master on a home system requires special playback techniques to be optimal,1 and while these are available, they aren’t accessible to everyone. Using a home master on a theatrical sound system also requires special playback, which is virtually never available. Thus, masters and monitoring are covered here in one chapter because they are interwoven.
