ABSTRACT
All audio compression methods and systems rely on the application of the perceptive coding model based on the exploitation of specific characteristics of the human auditory system. For this reason, a thorough understanding of the workings of the human ear-brain combination is a prerequisite for grasping the rationale of different analog and digital audio solutions. Before discussing the details of digital audio implementations, we will examine the basics of the mechanisms of human hearing.
