ABSTRACT

A rugby match is being played in a stadium in Wales. As the tension mounts before the kickoff, the crowds in their thousands anticipate an exciting international match. As if by magic or osmosis and without an observable conductor, the great Welsh hymn Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah (Arglwydd arwain trwy’r anialwch) to the tune Cwm Rhondda spontaneously begins; before long the whole crowd (at least the Welsh) are singing their hearts out. It creates an inspiring feeling of belonging.
