Ininternationaltradeamulti-modalorcombinedtransportservice entailstheuseofmorethanonemodeoftransportonaparticular journeyofferedbyasingleoperatoractingasprincipalfortheentire journey.Itisthusathroughtransportservicefromdoortodooror warehousetowarehouse;itisorientatedtotheneedsoftheuserin thatitcatersfortheentireconsignmentjourneyrequired,incontrast toatraditionalsingle-modeservicecoveringonlythelegofthe journeyperformedbytheonemode.Operatorsmayattempttooffer acombinedservicebysubcontractingtooperatorsinothermodes, buttheycannotbecalledmulti-modaltransportoperatorsuntilthey accepttheresponsibilityofactingasprincipal.Anymodeof transport-road,rail,inlandwaterway,seaorair-maybeinvolved inamulti-modaltransportoperation.
