ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the complexity of the issues surrounding using other media outside film, television and games as the core intellectual property. A fan convention or con is an event in which fans of a particular film, television series, comic book, actor, or an entire genre of entertainment gather to participate and hold programs and other events, and to meet experts, famous personalities, and each other. The advancement in comics' ability over time to develop a sophisticated language that allows the authors to express action has been a real addition in the form's ability to tell a story. Slash fiction is a genre of fan fiction that focuses on the depiction of romantic or sexual relationships between fictional characters of the same sex. Cosplay is another expression of fan culture in which participants don costumes and accessories to represent a specific character or idea.
