ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the behaviour of semiconductors and the way in which they are employed in diodes and transistors.

On completion of this chapter you should be able to:

1 Understand the way in which conduction takes place in semiconductor materials. 2 Understand how these materials are employed to form devices such as diodes and

transistors. 3 Know of the different ways in which a transistor may be connected and the effects

these will have on the characteristics and parameters of the transistor. 4 Obtain values for the basic transistor parameters from the appropriate transistor

characteristics.
