ABSTRACT

Modern vehicles are equipped with a good deal of electrical and electronic equipment. It is estimated that some vehicles contain several kilometres of wire. The amount of wire (cable) used, and the amount of electric current that passes through it, causes designers to use other solutions, one of which is called multiplexing. Multiplexing is used in computer controlled systems where it is possible to use a data (control) bus, which is a cable that carries electronic messages to switch equipment on and off, and a power bus which is a cable that carries the main electric current to operate the equipment. The system most widely used for computer controlled equipment is known as CAN (controller area network). Ordinary and multiplex wiring are shown in Fig. 9.1.
